How much does home care cost?

With a recognised care level, the long-term care insurance fund covers most of the home care – nursing services are covered by the long-term care insurance fund, while medically prescribed medical services are covered by the health insurance fund. For your individual needs we prepare a tailored cost estimate in advance; a personal contribution only arises if services exceed the maximum amount of your care level.

How is everything calculated?

The long-term care insurance fund covers the majority of home care services. People who have been assigned a care level are entitled to various benefits: • Care benefits in kind: The care service bills its costs directly with the long-term care insurance fund up to the maximum amount of the respective care level. If the care services exceed this amount, the person in need of care must cover the additional costs privately. • Combined benefits: Insured persons in need of care can combine care allowance for care provided by relatives with care benefits in kind for care provided by a home care service. The budget for care benefits in kind is not fully used up by the care service in this case. • Support and relief benefits: Regardless of care level, all people in need of care are entitled to a relief amount of 131 euros, which can be used for supportive everyday services such as household-related tasks, group offers and care support. • Prescription of home nursing care (HKP): This benefit is prescribed by a doctor and provides support in cases of serious illness or acute deterioration, particularly after hospital stays or outpatient operations. Please note that the exact benefits and requirements may vary depending on the care level and individual situation. Applying for and billing the benefits is generally handled through the long-term care insurance fund and the respective care services

Do you have to make a co-payment for home care?

When home nursing care is used, co-payments are required. This co-payment amounts to ten percent of the costs in accordance with § 37 (5) SGB V in conjunction with § 61 sentence 3 SGB V. In addition, a fee of 10.00 euros per prescription applies for each medical prescription, including supplementary and follow-up prescriptions. The co-payment obligation applies to all insured persons aged 18 and over and is limited to 28 days per calendar year. The long-term care insurance fund that approves the care collects the co-payments when home care is used. The co-payment amount is calculated based on the total costs per day of home nursing care received on each occasion. The exact percentage of the daily co-payment is determined retroactively by the responsible health insurance fund based on the care service's invoice. It is also possible to apply for an exemption from the co-payment with the responsible health insurance fund.

Which services do the long-term care insurance fund and health insurance fund cover?

The long-term care insurance covers the costs of home care services. People in need of care have the option of either receiving care benefits in kind, if they are cared for by a home care service, or receiving care allowance if the care is provided by a relative. Health insurance generally covers the costs of home care services associated with medical care. This includes, among other things, home nursing care carried out on a doctor's prescription and required to maintain or restore health.

How are combined care benefits calculated?

The calculation of combined care for a person in need of care is based on the individual care needs as well as the chosen combination of care allowance and care benefits in kind. The percentage of care benefits in kind used is taken into account. If, for example, 70% of the benefits in kind are claimed, the person in need of care receives the remaining 30% as a proportional care allowance.

What does medical care mean?

Medical care comprises all medical measures prescribed by a general practitioner or specialist and carried out by qualified nurses from the fields of health and nursing care as well as geriatric care. These include, among other things, changing dressings and administering medication.

What are care aids and to what extent are they funded for me?

Accepted Answer

People in need of care are entitled to the provision of care aids designed to make care easier, relieve discomfort or enable a more independent way of life. These aids include both measures to improve the living environment as well as care consumables such as disposable gloves, bed protection pads or disinfectants. The long-term care insurance fund covers the costs of such aids up to an amount of 40 euros per month, provided that an application has been submitted beforehand.

Can the relief amount of 131 EUR be paid out?

The relief amount is a benefit in kind that is granted upon application. It is not paid out automatically or as a lump sum to the person in need of care.

How do I apply for a care level?
